• Basic idea: facial features differ from the rest of the face in intensities images because of their low brightness.

Steps:

• apply a grayscale erosion and an extremum sharpening operation to enhance facial features (see Fig. 11 b)

• evaluate the projections of the topographic gray level relief of the connected components.
